Excursion
The West coast of Portugal offers us experiences of centuries-old traditions in a variety of shapes and forms. Throughout an afternoon we will have a taste of those traditions and, at the same time, learn the history of what is considered one of the seven wonders of Portugal – the village of Óbidos.
The village of Óbidos was conquered from the Moors by the first king of Portugal in 1148 and still today is surrounded by a magnificent wall. We will walk in its narrow streets and among its white washed houses and pass by the picturesque church of Santa Maria de Óbidos where we will be able to observe the paintings of the baroque artist Josefa de Óbidos and the romantic tomb of the Noronha family which once provided the village’s mayor. We will then visit the Jewish quarter and end our tour at the Manuelina door and window where we will learn more about the epic Portuguese Discoveries.
That afternoon we will also visit a factory which produces the renowned nectar of Óbidos – the Ginginha, a liqueur developed by the monks of Cister which is one of the great traditional products of Óbidos. There, we will be shown all the steps by which this liqueur goes through before it reaches the public. At the end of our factory tour we will still have time to enjoy a taste of this famous liqueur.
We hope that you all enjoy this afternoon!
